Maine Family Planning now offers primary care services at its clinics in Houlton and Près Isle, expanding health care options for Aroostook County residents.

Heather Curran, FNP-BC, is expanding her role at MFP to include primary care after several years as a part-time family planning provider. Curran has worked in health care in Aroostook County for nearly 20 years and as a board-certified family nurse practitioner since 2015. Born and raised in the county, Curran is passionate about providing health care. quality to the communities she grew up in and is excited about the opportunities at MFP.

“I am excited to create a primary care practice at MFP with built-in time to focus on your concerns. Maine Family Planning is a small practice where patients are truly treated as individuals, and there is a high level of accessibility – like you call our office and someone picks up the phone, not a check-in. I love it, and I know my neighbors here in the county love it too,” Curran said. “I feel like there are a lot of questions people need answers to. We serve all income levels, take all kinds of insurance, and we have a sliding fee scale for patients who pay themselves. And we’re not just for women! We see patients of all genders, ages 12 and up.

The decision to expand services to include primary care was driven by a variety of factors, according to Maine Family Planning’s senior vice president of program services Evelyn Kieltyka, FNP-BC. “We have participated in several Aroostook County Community Needs Assessments over the past decade that have highlighted the need for additional health care options, and we have also heard directly from our patients and our Patient Advisory Council. So when Heather and I started discussing the provision of primary care, it made sense for many reasons.

Primary care appointments will be available at Maine Family Planning in Près Isle on Mondays and Fridays, with Tuesdays and Thursdays reserved for family planning care. Regional Director Melissa Gray said both clinics are committed to flexibility and will work with patients to find appointments that suit their schedules.
